This approximately 50-kilometer-long section of the Eger Bike Trail takes you through a deep, forested valley that connects famous spa towns. In terms of difficulty, it is a moderately challenging route. Although you’ll be riding mostly downstream, the valley here is relatively narrow and rugged, so you’ll encounter occasional short climbs and descents. The surface combines paved sections with forest trails and occasional stretches on quieter side roads. So it’s best to leave your road bikes at home; the ideal choice for this trip is a trekking, hybrid, or gravel bike. The route starts in Karlovy Vary, from where the trail will take you smoothly past the forested hills of the Doupov Mountains and the Ore Mountains.
The first major stop along the route is Lázně Kyselka. This town is world-renowned as the birthplace of Mattoni mineral water. Although the bike trail runs along the opposite left bank, you can easily cross the bridge to reach the historic spa complex directly. Here you can admire the carefully restored historic buildings and visit the modern, interactive Mattoni Museum in the Löschner Pavilion, which details the fascinating story of the visionary Heinrich Mattoni. You can see original historic bottles, labels, and old machinery here. Past Kyselka, you’ll also pass the unique Radošov wooden covered bridge, which is definitely worth a quick stop and a photo.
From there, the trail continues through the peaceful countryside of a narrow valley, passing through Jakubov and Stráž nad Ohří, where paved sections alternate with pleasant forest shade. Your destination awaits you in Klášterec nad Ohří, where the route leads you directly into the beautiful, expansive English-style castle park. Here, you can round out your trip with a visit to the castle, which features an exhibition of rare Thun porcelain. Right next to the park is the Lázně Evženie spa complex. At the information booth there, you can sample the local healing mineral springs—Evženie and Městský pramen—which is the best reward after a full day in the saddle. From Klášterec, you can easily return to Karlovy Vary with your bikes via regular train service.
