If you’re looking for a pleasant, peaceful, and safe bike ride, this approximately 20-kilometer stretch of the Eger Bike Trail (Bike Route No. 6) is just the ticket. The entire route runs along a smooth asphalt surface, is practically 100 percent flat, and completely avoids road traffic. This makes it absolutely ideal for families with young children, bike trailers, or anyone who wants to enjoy a day in the saddle in complete comfort and without any strenuous climbs. The route starts in Cheb, where, before setting out, you and your children can explore the famous cluster of colorful medieval houses known as Špalíček or visit Cheb Castle with its massive Black Tower. From the castle, the trail then smoothly leads you out of town along the tranquil river.
The ride is very pleasant, as you’ll pass through meadows and wooded areas where you’ll be accompanied only by the murmur of the water and the singing of birds. The only brief stop along the way is as you pass through the village of Vokov, where you can pull over for a moment at the edge of the trail to see the small, newly restored Chapel of the Virgin Mary. Your destination awaits you in Kynšperk nad Ohří, where you’ll be greeted right at the entrance by the town’s landmark—a long, covered wooden footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists. You can round out the trip with the kids perfectly with ice cream or a good meal at the canoeing campsite right by the river, or in the garden of the restored Kynšperk brewery. If you don’t feel like cycling back the same way, you can easily return to Cheb with your bikes on a regular train. More experienced cyclists can continue along the bike path all the way to Sokolov, from where you can also easily get back by train.
