Discover the charm of the West Bohemian countryside and the architectural gems along the Eger River. The entire route connects to the German section of the Eger Cycle Route in Bavaria and guarantees you stunning views of untamed nature as well as educational stops at museums. The trip begins in historic Cheb, where you can admire the unique Špalíček complex of merchants’ houses, the colorful half-timbered houses on the square, the mysterious historic roof trusses, and Cheb Castle, which is the only Staufer imperial palace in the Czech Republic.
From Cheb, you’ll set off by bike along the comfortable main bike trail No. 6, following the Eger River downstream through Kynšperk nad Ohří. Along the way, you’ll pass the village of Dasnice, where you can take a short detour to the nearby Chlum Svaté Marie provostry complex, one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in the Czech Republic. Continue on to Sokolov, where the French-style castle garden and the local museum—featuring an exhibition on the Nostitz family—invite you to take a break. Just a short distance further on in Královské Poříčí, visit Statek Bernard—a center for traditional crafts featuring a restaurant, a petting zoo, and a LEGO museum. You’ll then pass beneath the medieval town of Loket with its majestic castle. Here, you can take the most beautiful photos from the bridge over the river. Passing through the magical rock formations of Svatošské skály—a favorite spot of writer J. W. Goethe—you’ll arrive in Karlovy Vary. In the Doubí district of Karlovy Vary, you’ll be enchanted year-round by the Christmas atmosphere at the local chateau, and the trip will conclude at the Moser Visitor Center, where you’ll learn about the artistry of the local master glassmakers. For the return trip to Cheb, you can conveniently take a direct train.
