Set out on a fantastic bike ride and enjoy a day full of historical sights. The trip begins in Louny, where you’ll be captivated right from the start by the monumental St. Nicholas Church with its unique tent-shaped roof and observation tower, which offers a magnificent view of the entire Czech Central Mountains. From Louny, you’ll cycle along Bike Route No. 6 downstream along the Eger River. The route runs mostly along quiet side roads with little traffic and partly along separate bike paths. Your first major stop is Libochovice, with its castle and attractive castle park. From there, continue to the town of Budyně nad Ohří, where the unique water castle—featuring the Janda Museum and an alchemist’s workshop—is well worth a visit. Exercise extra caution on the stretch between the villages of Písty and Doksany, where you can expect heavier traffic. In Doksany, be sure not to miss the historic monastery. You’ll then pass through the fortified town of Terezín, which, while a somber reminder of World War II, is also a fascinating fortress offering tours of its mysterious underground passages. The town was founded at the end of the 18th century by Emperor Joseph II as a modern military fortress to defend against the Prussian threat. The trip ends in historic Litoměřice, where the Eger River flows spectacularly into the Elbe. Once you arrive, be sure to visit St. Stephen’s Cathedral or the city’s symbol—the Kalich observation tower. Pay close attention as you approach the city while riding along the bike lane on the Tyrš Bridge. For a comfortable return trip to Louny, we recommend taking the train.
