The Ruins of Šumburk Castle

1557

The ruins of Šumburk Castle (Šumná) are located on a prominent basalt hill above the left bank of the Eger River, at the border between the Ore Mountains and the Doupov Mountains, in the wild natural area of Klášterec. The monumental ruins of the castle palace, with its preserved vaults, and the massive 15th-century fortifications make Šumburk well worth a visit. From the castle ruins, there is a beautiful view of the winding Eger River, the Ore Mountains, and the Evženie Spa complex across the river. The starting point for the hike up to the castle is the hiking trail junction near the village of Šumná; detailed maps and guidebooks are available at the Tourist Information Center below the castle in Klášterec nad Ohří. Be sure to take a tour of the preserved castle gate and the cellar areas. Other attractions near Šumburk include the scenic viewpoints in the adjacent Klášterec Castle Park and the spa colonnade.
