Hauenstein Castle

1557

Hauenstein Castle (Horní Hrad) is located on a wooded rocky promontory in the deep valley of the Hornohradský Stream, less than three kilometers north of the Eger River. A marked turnoff leads to it from the Eger Bike Trail, though it is quite steep for cyclists. Originally a medieval watchtower castle, it was magnificently rebuilt in the 19th century in the English Neo-Gothic style. After years of neglect, it underwent a unique volunteer-led restoration and today boasts a vibrant cultural life.

The entrance to the grounds is through the castle gate, which houses the ticket office; from there, you can freely explore the entire castle complex—from the cellars to the attic—without a guide. Be sure to visit the castle’s observation tower, which offers breathtaking views of the ridges of the Ore Mountains and the forests of the Doupov Hills, or the adjacent arboretum below the castle, featuring rare tree species. Other attractions in the immediate vicinity include a nature trail through the stream valley, the Neo-Gothic castle chapel, and the castle garden.
