The Monastery and Castle of Doksany

1557

The monastery in Doksany reached the height of its prosperity in the 13th and 14th centuries. It was plundered during the Hussite Wars and the Thirty Years’ War. In the second half of the 17th century, it underwent a grand Baroque reconstruction. After the monastery was dissolved (in 1782) by Emperor Joseph II, the building was used as a hospital and barracks. Later, following its conversion into a manor house, the monastery took on the character of a chateau. In the 1990s, nuns returned to Doksany. Perhaps the most impressive part of the Doksany monastery is the Romanesque crypt. Despite renovations from the late 19th century, you will find yourself in a Romanesque setting from the 12th and 13th centuries. You can also visit the monastery church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary on the north side of the second courtyard. The monastery complex is surrounded on the south and west sides by Baroque gardens and an English park.
