The fortress town of Terezín was founded in 1780 by Emperor Joseph II near the confluence of the Elbe and Eger rivers to defend the Czech borders. This unique monument represents the pinnacle of European bastion architecture, featuring massive ramparts, a functional water system, and dozens of kilometers of underground tunnels. From the very beginning, it served not only as a military fortress, but its separate section (the Small Fortress) was also used as a prison, where Gavrilo Princip was held at the end of his life following the Sarajevo assassination. Visitors can embark on immersive tours of the mysterious underground defense complex by the light of traditional lanterns, accompanied by guides from the Terezín Fortress Museum, which is located in Retranchement 5. In the neighboring Artillery Barracks, you can also visit the extensive Franz Joseph I Museum or the renovated Cavalier 2, which features exhibits on military life in the 18th century.

During World War II, Terezín went down in history as a place of human suffering, when the Small Fortress became a police prison for the Prague Gestapo and the town itself served as a collection and transit camp for citizens of Jewish origin before their transport to extermination camps. This tragic chapter, which cost thousands of lives, is sensitively commemorated today by exhibitions administered by the Terezín Memorial
