The Skalka Reservoir is located in the flat, densely forested valley of the Eger River, right on the western edge of the city of Cheb, just a short distance from the Czech-German border. Built in the 1960s, the reservoir now serves as a major recreational area lined with sandy beaches and romantic rocky nooks. From a cyclist’s perspective, the gateway to the reservoir is the picturesque floating swimming area in Podhoří, where the bike path follows the reservoir’s shore and where you’ll find a boat rental and refreshments. You definitely must visit the 17-meter-high concrete dam itself, which offers an impressive view of the water’s surface and the nearby Cheb skyline. Other attractions in the immediate vicinity of the reservoir include Komorní hůrka, the youngest volcano in Central Europe, and the historic Cheb Watchtower.
