Hohenberg Castle is situated on a steep granite cliff directly above the Eger (Eger) River, just before the Czech border near Pomezí, in the historic border region of Smrčiny. Hohenberg is well worth a visit as it is the best-preserved castle complex in the entire Eger River region, with foundations dating back to the 12th century (first written mention in 1222). The castle ramparts offer a beautiful view of the wild Eger River valley and the meadows along the Czech-German border. The entrance to the entire castle complex is a massive gate with a tower, and you can pick up printed materials in Czech right in the courtyard. Be sure to visit the exhibitions at the Porzellanikon State Museum, which is located directly in the castle palace. Other highlights in Hohenberg include a walk along the castle ramparts with their defensive bastions or a visit to the romantic Carolinenquelle Valley.
